PRAYING FOR PEACE

Lady Chapel Altar

St Nicolas Church is a haven of peace and quiet to which the people of Newbury have been coming, in good times and bad, for hundreds of years. With all the benefits of global communication we realise that the impact of war is felt much further away than the battlefield, not least for those with family members and friends on the frontline. And so, wherever we are, we reach out to God, opening our hearts to him and laying before him our thanks, our concerns, our anxieties, our fears, our anger, our longings for things to be put right.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Loving God, you have led us to this place, not to shield us from heartache and the pain of human life, but to heal us and inspire us, to gently redirect us, till we see the world as you do and love it with your love. Amen. (St Teresa of Lisieux)

Almighty God, from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed, kindle, we pray thee, in the hearts of all men the true love of peace; and guide with thy pure and peaceable wisdom those who take council for the nations of the earth; that in tranquility thy kingdom may go forward, till the earth be filled with the knowledge of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Bishop Paget of Oxford, 1851-1922)

Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the king of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

O God, who would fold both heaven and earth in a single peace: Let the design of thy great love lighten upon the waste of our wraths and sorrows: and give peace to thy Church, peace among nations, peace in our dwellings, and peace in our hearts: through thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Lord God, let your peace rest so gently on our hearts and minds that we may have the strength to work for peace in our world today, tomorrow and for ever. Amen. (From Prayers for Children, compiled by Christopher Herbert)

God of goodness and love, whom we can trust to be with us in every hour of need; Watch over and protect all who are faced with the fears of fighting and war. Protect the children and their families. Keep them together and safe from harm. We ask that peace will soon return And that this war may bring about a new freedom and hope, where countries will once again live at peace with one another. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Amen.

Show us, good Lord, the peace we should seek, the peace we must give, the peace we can keep, the peace we must forgo, and the peace you have given in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Prayer used by the Corrymeela Community)

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always. Amen.
