CIVIC EVENTS |
During the year, St Nicolas hosts a number of civic services for the town of Newbury. Members of the public are most welcome to attend.
|
The Tigris Service is held at 11:30 am on the Sunday nearest to February 27th. HMS Tigris (click here for more details) was a submarine which was adopted by the town of Newbury during World War Two. She was commissioned in June 1940 and lost less than three years later. She left Malta on February 18th 1943 to patrol south west of Naples and was last sighted on February 24th, 39 miles from Capri. A German submarine chaser claimed to have made contact with a submarine and carried out a successful attack on February 27th. In this service we commemorate the loss of HMS Tigris and the 63 men of the Royal Navy who served as her crew.

After the annual Mayor-Making Ceremony at the Corn Exchange in May, the Mayor's Civic Service takes place in St Nicolas. The new Mayor plans the service with his or her Chaplain, together with the Rector of St Nicolas. The Mayor's Chaplain is usually the preacher at this service, which begins at 11:30 am.
|
On Remembrance Sunday, a service takes place in St Nicolas at 11:15 am after the Parade through the town and the Act of Remembrance at the town's War Memorial. This Remembrance Sunday Service is attended by the Mayor, who reads one of the lessons. Town councillors and representatives from the armed forces and many other organisations in the town are also present for this moving act of worship.
